While sitting in silence in a hide at night on a private reserve in South Africa, I almost jumped out of my seat in excitement when these southern white rhinos appeared out of the darkness and lined up for a drink.  I could see reflections of the fiberglass caps placed to protect them after dehorning, a procedure done to reduce poaching.  While I was so joyful to see them, I do wish the legacy we are leaving for future generations did not include desperate measures such as this to protect from man's greed.
